These are inspired by love tokens originally made in the late 1700s and the early 1800s.

Messages of LOVE are written on these Valentines which are folded in a precise intricacy so that as you open it according to the numbered sections, you read a verse or a phrase, and tiny hand painted pictures are revealed. The very inner most part of these Valentines have woven paper hearts or a woven paper heart and hand. They are sometimes tricky for the recipient to re-fold, which is part of the charm of the puzzle purse.

All artwork, which is a combination of naive / schoolgirl art / fraktur influences, is done with watercolors and India ink on aged paper. I have referenced American folk art books for ideas for flowers, birds, and other early American designs. I use poems of the 1700s and 1800s. Keep in mind these are hand done, so each one will be unique. Many steps are involved in the process of making these one of a kind tokens of love. I'm sure you and your loved one will appreciate the time and care it takes to create them.

The valentines measure 2 1/2" square closed and 7 1/2" square when fully opened.

Each valentine comes with a 3" papier mache box, painted, aged, and decorated with double woven hearts. The boxes with shredded paper and coordinating tops are my own idea that I began using several years ago. As far as I know, the puzzle purses were not delivered in boxes.

Happy shopping!

Antique Quilt Lavender Pillows

Antique Quilt Lavender Pillows

These are made from an antique quilt, ca. late 1800s. Shapes and sizes vary as they have been cut out along the quilt block edges. Stuffing consists of fiberfil, sometimes wool and cotton scraps, and a couple of scoops of lavender buds. The original quilt had two layers of blanket for a lining, so if the fabric looks threadbare, there is still a lining and the lavender buds will not fall out. Each listing shows both sides of the pillow.

You can find these at Honeysuckle Lane, or email me with your choices.

Americana Folk Art Eagles

Inspired by an antique, fabric eagle, I drew a pattern a few years ago and made my own patriotic eagles. I have made more, this time they are larger (all but one), and each is a slightly different shape as I adjusted the paper pattern each time I cut out a new bird.

All are made from antique quilts, ca. early 1900s. The front of the eagle is the front of the quilt, and the back is the backing from the quilt.

Each eagle has an antique bone ring sewn on the back for hanging on a nail, or loop an antique ribbon through the ring for a decorative hanger.

I will include a length of vintage seam binding ribbon if you’d like it. Coordinating color of your choice.

I’ve added a label from the old quilt fabric with my name and year made.

Shipping in the U.S. is a flat $8 no matter how many you purchase.
